In the summer of 2017, South Suburban College students, faculty & administrators will spent six weeks in these four countries:

  • France
  • Costa Rica
  • Ghana
  • China

Scholarships for this program are available for South Suburban College students only.  All applications are due by November 1st.

International Study Scholarships

SSC Foundation Africa Scholarship

Travel June – July 2018

Application Deadline: November 1, 2017

The SSC Foundation Africa Scholarship is designed to assist in funding study in the Accra, Ghana Summer Program administered through University Studies Abroad Consortium (USAC). Programs and transportation costs are fully funded by the South Suburban College Foundation. Scholarships will be awarded in the spring for use in the following summer. Scholarship recipients are selected by a committee consisting of representatives from International Studies and the College Foundation. Travel takes place in June-July 2018.

Eligibility:

  • Must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00.
  • Must have completed a minimum of 15 college-level credits at the time of application.
  • Must be enrolled for a minimum of six credit hours during semester prior to departure.
  • Must complete all appropriate application materials, including three letters of recommendation, a personal essay, and a personal interview.

SSC Foundation China Scholarship

Travel June-July 2018

Application Deadline: November 1, 2017

The SSC Foundation China Scholarship is designed to assist in funding study in the China Summer Program administered through University Studies Abroad Consortium (USAC). Programs and transportation costs are fully funded by the South Suburban College Foundation. Scholarships will be awarded in the spring for use in the following summer. Scholarship recipients are selected by a committee consisting of representatives from International Studies and the College Foundation. Travel takes place in June-July 2018.

Eligibility:

  • Must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.00.
  • Must have completed 15 college level credits at the time of application.
  • Must be enrolled for a minimum of six credit hours at SSC during semester prior to departure.
  • Must complete all appropriate application materials, including an application form, three letters of recommendation, a personal essay, and a person interview.

SSC Foundation Costa Rica Scholarship

Travel June-July 2018

Application Deadline: November 1, 2017

The SSC Foundation Costa Rica Scholarship is designed to assist in funding study in the Illinois Consortium for International Studies and Programs (ICISP) sponsored study abroad program in Costa Rica. Programs and transportation costs are fully funded by the South Suburban College Foundation for a four-week summer course in the Spanish language and Costa Rican culture and history. Scholarships will be awarded in the spring for the use in the following summer. Scholarship recipients are selected by a committee consisting of representatives from International Studies and the College Foundation. Travel takes place in June-July 2018.

  • Must have completed 15 college level credits at the time of application.
  • Must be enrolled for a minimum of six credit hours during semester prior to departure.

SSC Foundation France Scholarship

The SSC Foundation Dijon, France Scholarship is designed to assist in funding study in the Illinois Consortium for International Studies and Programs (ICISP) sponsored study abroad program in Dijon, France. Programs and transportation costs are fully funded by the South Suburban College Foundation for a four-week summer course in French literature, culture, and history. Scholarships will be awarded in the spring for the use in the following summer. Scholarship recipients are selected by a committee consisting of representatives from International Studies and the College Foundation. Travel takes place in June-July 2018.

Founders’ Study Abroad Scholarship Application (in honor of Art Adams, JoAnn McCarthy and Dick Wood). ICISP (Illinois Consortium for International Studies and Programs) Scholarships are in the amount of $500 for summer and $1,000 for semester programs. Students participating in an ICISP program are eligible to apply. The deadline is Oct. 15 for Spring programs, Feb. 15 for Summer programs and May 15 for Fall programs.

Boren Award for International Study (NSEP) Boren scholarships fund American undergraduate students as they acquire language skills and experiences in areas of the world critical to the security of our nation. (Study in the United States, Western Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand is excluded.) Scholarships vary from $2,500 to $20,000 depending on the length of the program. An 8-week summer STEMS scholarship is also available.

Benjamin Gilman International Scholarship Applicants must be receiving a Pell Grant at time of application or prove that he/she will receive a Pell Grant during the study abroad term. Recipients are awarded up to $5,000 depending on the length of the program. There is a $3,000 supplement for students studying "critical languages". The application deadline is Oct. (early decision) and March for Summer and Fall programs and Oct. for Spring programs. (Summer programs must include in-country stays of at least 4 weeks.)

Critical Language Scholarship

CLS aims to increase the number of Americans studying and mastering 14 critical languages through fully-funded summer language institutes. Participants are expected to continue language study beyond the CLS experience and apply the language skills to future academic and professional goals. Application deadline is early Nov.

Freeman/Asia Scholarship Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study are eligible to study in any of 15 countries. Stipends of $3,000 for summer, $5,000 for a semester and $7,000 for a year-long study are available. Application deadline is March (summer) and April (Fall/year-long).
